Organic Non-GMO
GROWING FOOD organically is a process that is becoming more and more popular. It has become so popular that you are often able to find food in the big grocery stores and chain stores that is marked Organic. However, always in the back of your mind is the question "is it really organic?". The Only way to be sure is to grow the food yourself.
WHAT IS ORGANIC? Why is organic food becoming so popular despite being twice as costly as conventional. Organically grown food is food that is grown without any herbicides, insecticides, hormones, or antibiotics. It is also grown from heirloom seeds, meaning the seeds have not been genetically modified (GMO) so they retain many of the characteristics and nutritional benefits from plants that were grown decades ago.
THE PURPOSE behind growing organically is to help eliminate harmful toxins from being introduced to the homegrown produce. In addition to promoting beneficial insects in your garden, many people have compost piles which they strive to achieve a nutritious and beneficial balance for their plants, for the beneficial insects, and for insect crops such as earthworms, mealworms, and soldier flies. Always remember, if it's in your soil, it's in your plants and consequently, in your food. See the animal/insect management page for more information on promoting beneficial insect growth. The beneficial insects (see ladybug img) will help to control harmful insects (see aphid image) which damage crops both cosmetically and structurally.
ORGANICALLY GROWN, non GMO, produce tends to be less perfect and less uniform in appearance but more nutritional and beneficial. Usually organically gorwn produce is smaller since there are no hormones in the plant food. Additionally, there are no preservatives so naturally, organically grown Non-GMO produce will not last as long after harvestings, which is the way it should be. This is the reason, we have included a food preservation section in this website. Food preservation/processing as soon as the produce is picked will ensure your garden investment will provide returns well past the growing season.
